We were up by 6 to take showers and get ready to leave the boat. No matter how much we pack ahead of time or how early we get up, it always seems to be a mad rush to get everything in the car and pull off, since if you dillydally you hold up the whole line behind you. An odd thing about the ferry is that it always operates on Alaska time, even if you're in another time zone. So, when we drove off the boat at about 7:30 am, it immediately became 8:30 am local (Bellngham) time.
After we pulled off the boat we stopped in a parking area
to reorganize. We had only been able to access our back hatch for about a minute before we
had to pull off the boat, so everything had been stuffed in somewhat
haphazardly. I got out of the car and immediately started doing a "We're
not in Alaska anymore" happy dance.
We stopped at a Fred Meyer for ice for the cooler and
called our friend Annika (Riegert) Puckering, who was expecting us for brunch.
We had not seen her for almost 10 years. She has a son Drew who is eight, and
the kids enjoyed playing with him after brunch.
At about noon we got back on the road and our "power vacation" en route to Nana & Papa's house began. We drove to Seattle and the Pike Place Market, which we had really enjoyed on our way to Alaska three years ago. Since we had been there before (and since it was super crowded and way hot), we just hit the highlights. We watched them toss fish at the Pike Place Fish Market (where LS and BS had held an octopus last time), and got a yummy mishmash of a lunch -- freshly made samosas and orange and teriyaki chicken on a stick. We finished up with hot fresh donuts and some huge, juicy peaches. We again marveled at the gorgeous (and cheap!) bouquets and amazingly large, beautiful produce and seafood. Ironically, the fresh Alaskan halibut was more plentiful and cheaper than it was in Alaska! I think if we lived in Seattle, the Pike Place Market would put us in the poorhouse. ;-)
After the market we drove straight through to Portland, Oregon for the night. Even though it was late when we got to the hotel, we made a quick dinner in our hotel room and the kids hit the pool while I did laundry. This was the night of my 20th high school reunion in San Diego and I was sad to miss it, especially since I spent the majority of the evening in the hotel laundry room.
We all hit the hay as we had a long day of sightseeing planned in Portland...
